Fix: tiworker.exe High Disk Usage Problem for Windows 8 and 10

TiWorker.exe is a Windows Module Installer, an official software component of Windows Update service for Windows 8 and above.

It’s a process that is always working in the background while your computer is on. TiWorker.exe helps install all the components to complete the update. It’s without a doubt crucial for your system to run updates smoothly. However, it occasionally utilizes too much CPU, even after the updating process has finished, which causes further problems.

FIX #1 – Malware Scan

Malware’s (or malicious programs) could definitely be the cause of this issue. So, the first thing you should do is check your computer for viruses and remove them if your computer happens to be infected.

FIX #2 – System Update

You should install all Windows Updates you haven’t already. Follow these steps to do so.

For Windows 8 and 8.1:

  1. Press the Windows Key and ‘R’ at the same time.
  2. Type wuapp.exe in the dialogue box. Press OK.
  3. Select ‘Check for Updates’ and install as instructed.

For Windows 10:

  1. Click the Start Button.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select Update and Security.
  4. Select Check for Updates and install as instructed.

FIX #3 – System Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Sometimes it’s as simple as that – just run the official system maintenance provided by Windows and your problem might be solved. It’s supposed to automatically resolve issues, detect and delete unused and harmful files, as well as those which might interfere with the Windows update.

  1. Right-click on Start Button.
  2. Go to Control Panel’.
  3. Set View to Small Icons for a more clear view.

To solve this, you need to replace this problematic folder with a new, fresh one. Follow these steps to do so:

  1. Press the Windows Key and ‘R’ at the same time.
  2. In the dialogue box, type services.msc. Press OK.
  3. Find Windows Update in the list, right-click on it and select ‘Stop’.
  4. Go to C:\Windows.
  5. Delete or rename the current ‘SoftwareDistribution’ folder. Next time your system detects a new available update, it will create a new folder that is named SoftwareDistribution and put the needed files there.Software Distribution Folder

This should resolve the issue, however, in case it does not, proceed to the next suggestion.

FIX #5 – Task Manager Process Priorities

  1. Right-click on the Start Button.
  2. Go to Task Manager.
  3. Select More Details.
  4. Select Details tab.
  5. Find TiWorker.exe, then right-click on it and Set Priority to ‘Low’.

Additionally, you can also completely block it by clicking on ‘End Process Tree’.

FIX #6 – System File Checker

SFC (System File Checker) is a Windows utility that checks your computer for corrupt files and restores them. Here’s how you run it:

  1. Right-click on the Start Button.
  2. Select Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. In the new window, just type ‘sfc /scannow’ and press Enter.CMD sfc scan
  4. Let the System File Checker finish scanning. Don’t use your computer in the meantime.
  5. Restart your computer.

And again, if this didn’t work for you, continue to the next step.

FIX #7 – DISM Tool

DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) Tool could help you as well by detecting some errors that might have occurred and caused problems with the updates.

Follow these steps to run it:

  1. Right-click on the Start Button.
  2. Select Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. In the command window, type ‘Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth’CMD DISM scan
  4. Wait until DISM Tool has finished. You will be noted when that happens.
  5. Reboot.
